Toen de Grieken wonnen, namen zij wraak. De Romeinse bouwmeester Vitruvius noteert dat volgens de overlevering alle mannelijke inwoners zijn vermoord, en alle vrouwelijke afgevoerd in slavernij. Zuilen in de vorm van gebeeldhouwde lastdragers, de kariatiden, zouden aan die slavernij herinneren. Alberto Savinio geeft een aparte draai aan de rol van de kariatide in diens <em>Huis van de Domheid<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018 \u201cIk ben van mening dat het oude verraad van de Kari\u00ebrs, juist omdat het uit de oudheid stamt, niet meer strafrechtelijk vervolgd kan worden; en schuld verschijnt alleen in contrast met onschuld, zoals schaduw alleen in het contrast met licht verschijnt, terwijl de schaduw in de schaduw geen schaduw is, en schuld geen schuld waar alles schuld is.<br>&#8221;En waar heb je dan zo&#8217;n volheid van schuld gevonden?\u201d<br>\u201cHier in dit huis, dat ik op de schouders draag. Niet schuld, maar domheid, die de moeder van alle schuld is. Domheid op iedere verdieping, in iedere kamer, in de gangen, in de bergruimten, van de kelder tot op zolder.\u201d \u2019<br>Alberto Savinio <em>Casa della Stupidit\u00e0<\/em> (1942)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vervolgens stapt de kariatide uit het huis, dat instort onder zijn eigen domheid.
