In de ene zak zat Wijsheid, in de andere Domheid die hij gelijkelijk over de mensen moest verdelen. Maar hij struikelde over een berg en de zak met Domheid liep leeg in Chelm, de spreekwoordelijk domme plaats van de Poolse Joden. (Noah Pry\u0142ucki Khelemer naronim, 1917)<br>In een variant draagt de engel drie zakken: een met dommen, een met wijzen en een met mensen die wijzer zijn dan wijs. Dat zijn de betweters of ingewijden in een goddelijke wijsheid, die door de mensen voor dwaas worden gehouden; misschien gaat het om mensen die inzien dat er geen wijsheid is buiten de vergeefse pogingen greep te krijgen op de domheid.
